Students raise funds for Women’s Emergency Centre

During May – Domestic Violence Awareness month – Taylor Scholar Suzie Glenday (fr 2018), along with Mia Thomas (fr 2019) and Pat Mahony (fr 2020) raised $2,000 in cash and goods for the Women’s and Girls’ Emergency Centre (WAGEC).

In Australia domestic abuse is the leading cause of homelessness for women and 1.5 million women have experienced violence from a partner. *

Between a collection box in the Common Room and EFTPOS contributions in the dining hall, the team managed to raise an impressive donation in a few short days.

Suzie said:

“Girls aged 18-24 are in the most ‘at risk’ category for domestic violence, a similar age as the students in St Andrew’s College, so we wanted to play our part in raising awareness.

We would like to thank all the students and staff who donated generously.”

Based in Redfern, this not-for-profit organisation supports women and children impacted by domestic violence, homelessness and social disadvantage. Suzie will be visiting the Centre on Monday 24 May to hand over the donation.

WAGEC is always happy to receive donations of non-perishable foods, toiletries, gift vouchers and Opal cards see: www.wagec.org.au/about
