Thank you to everyone who visited St Andrew’s College on Saturday 26 March to attend the official launch of celebrations to mark 20 Years of Undergraduate Women at College.

It was a wonderful event to celebrate with guests Her Excellency, The Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales; Professor Mark Scott AO, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney; Chair of Foundation, Niall Cairns; previous Principals; previous Chairs of Council; alumni, students and staff.

The Principal of St Andrew’s Wayne Erickson paid tribute to the many women and men, past and present, who played a vital role in making St Andrew’s the equal opportunity institution it is today.

The Governor emphasised the importance of understanding the past to avoid making the same mistakes in the future and asked us to examine the impacts when people are excluded. She congratulated St Andrew’s for making the move to co-residency and on the appointment of Sasha Kovic, our first female, to Chair of Council.

Professor Mark Scott said there is much to commemorate, much to celebrate, and a significant opportunity to reflect on the nature of change.

Current student Anna Hunt (Fr 2022) was presented with the inaugural 20 Years of Undergraduate Women Scholarship award on the day. Anna, who is a talented soccer player, comes from rural and regional Australia and is studying nursing at the University of Sydney.

The Vice Principal of St Andrew’s and Director of Ceremonies for the event, Dr Hester Wilson, said: “It was wonderful to hear from the NSW Governor, University of Sydney Vice Chancellor, Senior Student and Principal; and welcome so many alumni, friends of College, staff and current students to mark this historic occasion. Truly welcoming women to College through the admission of women to full participation in college might have been a little late on the uptake for my liking, however College continues to be enriched and enlivened by all the wonderful women that have become part of our community both now and into the future.”
