Kupakwashe wins Global Voices Scholarship

St Andrew’s student Kupakwashe Matangira (Fr 2020) has been announced as the recipient of the 2021 Global Voices Freya Phillips National Scholarship. She will participate in the next Commission on the Status of Women, hosted by the United Nations in New York in March 2022, in addition to stakeholder meetings and UN events over the next year.

Jack Dalrymple, Global Voices CEO, stated, “Issues of gender equality affect all societies around the world. This is why it is so important that young Australian voices can engage in this space.”

Kupakwashe said: “This role allows me to combine my two passions of gender equality and youth engagement with public policy as the world maps out our post-Covid recovery journey. As part of this role, I will write a policy paper on how to integrate the voices of women and girls in the post-Covid decision-making agenda and attend briefings with leading policy makers in Canberra and the 2022 UN Convention on the Status of Women in New York!

I find it an immense honour and privilege to represent the voices of those who are often left out of the policy-making table. With strides in gender equality regressing due to Covid, I am humbled to be given the chance to input my thoughts on how Australia, and indeed our world, should be.”

Kupakwashe will join a select number of young leaders, NGOs, civil society organisations, and government officials representing Australia at the Commission on the Status of Women.

Principal Wayne Erickson said: “Many congratulations, Kupa on this brilliant opportunity to add your voice to the challenges facing gender equity for women and girls.”
